Promise 8: Galatians 4:6

PROMISE #8
I sent the Spirit of My Son into your heart so
you could call Me Father. Galatians 4:6

We think of adoption in terms of a legal state where the welfare of the adoptee is transferred to the new guardians but with God it is more than that, we give permission not only to come under His physical protection but to spiritually surrender. Where apron the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Jesus, comes and binds us to God in such a beautiful way as to give us the right to call the Creator “Abba” His acknowledgement that we are sons and daughters of the King of Kings that we have the right to inherit our Fathers Kingdom and all the blessings and treasures that are yet to be passed down. Background

This promise from Galatians comes from Paul’s letter to the Galatians, where he explains the profound nature of our adoption as God’s children. In the context of this verse, Paul addresses a mixed audience of Jewish and Gentile believers who may have seen adoption as a purely legal act. But here, Paul points out that God’s adoption goes deeper—it isn’t only about a change in status or guardianship; it’s a transformation of our relationship with God.

Exegesis

When we become followers of Jesus, God doesn’t just welcome us as guests or distant acquaintances. He brings us into His family as children, giving us a new identity and inheritance. The term “Abba” is an intimate Aramaic word that translates to “Father,” similar to calling someone “Dad” in English. This isn’t a term used lightly—it signifies a close, trusting, and deeply personal relationship with God.

This adoption is marked by the presence of the Holy Spirit, who lives within us, giving us the privilege and right to call God our Father. The Spirit isn’t just a passive presence; He actively confirms our identity, comforts us, and assures us of God’s unending love. This spiritual connection transforms our relationship with God from one of distant reverence to one of closeness and affection.

Through the Spirit, we not only acknowledge God as the Creator of the universe but also experience Him as our personal Father, someone who knows, loves, and protects us. We receive a family inheritance in the Kingdom of God—blessings and promises that are eternal and secure.

Additional Verses

  1. Romans 8:15-16 – “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”
    • This passage echoes the truth of Galatians 4:6, affirming our identity and the Holy Spirit’s role in our adoption and relationship with God.
  2. John 1:12 – “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”
    • Believing in Jesus brings us into God’s family, granting us the right to call Him Father.
  3. 1 John 3:1 – “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
    • This verse speaks to God’s loving choice to call us His children, emphasizing the depth of His love and commitment.

Summary

This promise in Galatians 4:6 assures us that God isn’t just an authority figure but a caring Father who desires a close, personal relationship with us. The Holy Spirit in our hearts acts as a guarantee of this adoption, reminding us daily of our place in God’s family and our inheritance as His children. With this privilege, we can approach God with confidence, trust, and love, calling Him “Abba, Father.”
