Greater Spiritual Hunger

A grandfather once told his grandson a tale about life – “A fight is going on inside me. It is a fight between two wolves. One is evil – he is angry, jealous, greedy and full of pride. The other is good – he is joyful, humble, patient, kind and full of compassion. The same fight goes on inside you, and inside every other person too.” The grandson pondered on what he had just heard, and asked: “Which wolf will win?” The grandfather simply replied: “The one you feed.”

This story is a picture of the constant battle that goes on within the life of each believer. Each day, we fight battles where we either give in to our sinful nature, or submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit within us. Just like the wolves in the story, the victor is often the one that we have fed. How then, do we feed our spirits? 

“Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honour at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.” (Colossians 3:1-2)

In Colossians, Paul tells us that even as we have been given new life in Christ, we are to set our hearts and desires on the things of God, and those which concern the heart of God. This means that we love the things that God loves, and hate the things that God hates.

Do you find yourself losing the daily battle, and giving in to your sinful nature? Begin to think on God’s word and especially on the Scriptures that He has quickened to you. Meditate on these Scriptures, and let God show us how to make practical applications to our life. Go on to memorise God’s word. These practices of meditating on His Word and memorising Scriptures can help us win our next battle.

Reflection

Take some time to evaluate your daily routine. List down the areas in your routine that does not feed your spiritual nature.

What are some practical steps you can take to purposefully grow in your hunger for the things of God?

Prayer

Dear God, I thank You because in You I have victory. Give me the strength and courage to surrender my whole life to You, and help me to set my heart and focus my desires on the things that are from You.

 

Fasting

7. **Spiritual Warfare**: Fasting is a weapon in spiritual warfare, strengthening believers against spiritual attacks, as Jesus implies in Matthew 17:21: “But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”

Praise for Spiritual Blessings in Christ
3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8that he lavished on us. Thanksgiving and Prayer
15For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, 16I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. 17I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
