PROMISE #17
I will discipline you in love, as a father who
loves His children. Proverbs 3:11-12
Doesn’t always feel good being disciplined having our actions curtailed, our motives questioned or our plans blocked but it’s sometimes necessary. I’m sure I came up with some eleberate plans as a child as to why I should be allowed to go down a certain route to fulfil certain realities, that would lead to a certain outcome only told by my Father ‘NO’ because I hadn’t taken into account all the possibilities of my actions in regard to the bigger picture or the needs of the rest of the family or the fact it was a dumb idea that would lead me into dangers I could not perceive at that moment in time. When God says No my child it’s out of a pure love of wanting the best for us. So when a door is closing allow it to happen and move on. Many times we will camp out and make a stand on our own interpretation of the situation and miss out on what God has install for us next. Jesus is the way, so lo earn to follow.
Background to Proverbs 3:11-12
Proverbs 3:11-12 states:
“My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.”
This passage is part of a larger section in the Book of Proverbs that emphasizes the importance of wisdom and understanding. Proverbs, traditionally attributed to King Solomon, offers practical guidance for living a righteous life, often contrasting the paths of wisdom and folly. In these verses, the writer personifies God as a loving father, highlighting the idea that discipline is a natural part of a loving relationship.
Exegesis of Proverbs 3:11-12
The central theme of these verses revolves around the nature of divine discipline and its role in the believer’s life. Here’s a closer look at the components:
- Discipline as a Sign of Love: The notion that God disciplines those He loves is crucial. Just as a loving parent guides their child, God seeks to correct and lead us toward what is best. This reflects the idea that true love is not merely permissive; it involves guiding us away from harmful choices.
- Human Reaction to Discipline: The verse acknowledges that discipline can be uncomfortable and often met with resentment. Our natural inclination might be to resist or despise such correction, particularly when it conflicts with our desires or plans. However, this reaction can lead to spiritual stagnation, as we may miss the greater blessings that come from aligning our lives with God’s will.
- The Bigger Picture: The analogy of a child making elaborate plans without seeing the potential dangers mirrors our own limited understanding of life’s complexities. Just as a child may not grasp the implications of their choices, we, too, often fail to see the broader context of God’s guidance in our lives. Recognizing that God’s ‘No’ can lead us away from danger and towards His intended path is crucial for spiritual growth.
- Moving Forward in Faith: When faced with closed doors or unanswered prayers, it’s important to trust that God’s ways are higher than ours. Holding on too tightly to our own interpretations can prevent us from experiencing the new opportunities God has in store. The call to “follow Jesus, the way” reinforces that trusting Him leads to fulfillment and purpose beyond our immediate understanding.
Relevant Additional Verses
- Hebrews 12:5-6: “And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, ‘My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.’”
- Revelation 3:19: “Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.”
- Psalm 94:12: “Blessed is the one you discipline, Lord, the one you teach from your law.”
Conclusion
In embracing divine discipline, we learn to view challenges not as mere obstacles but as opportunities for growth and deeper relationship with God. When we face ‘No’ from God, we can trust that it is motivated by love and a desire for our ultimate good. This understanding encourages us to move forward with faith, ready to discover the paths He lays before us. Remember, every closed door is a step closer to where God wants us to be.
