PROMISE #18 My power will rest on you when you are weak. 2 Corinthians 12:9

My power will rest on you when you are weak. 2 Corinthians 12:9

Trying to do life in our own strength isn’t easy and I have to take my hat off to those who go through life without ever needing God and don’t turn to therapy, alcohol, affairs, shopping, gambling, self harm etc etc. whilst us poor mixed up and emotionally weak Christians turn to the Lord in prayer for our comfort and strength knowing that joy comes in the morning and that the power of our God will come to rest and retrieve every situation, that He will lift us out of the mire and place our feet on solid ground, not because the bible tells me because I’ve seen God in action in people’s lives and watched them climb mountains not in there own strength but to the glory of God through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Context

This verse is part of a larger passage where Paul describes a personal struggle he calls a “thorn in the flesh.” While the exact nature of this thorn is unknown, it was something Paul found deeply challenging and repeatedly asked God to remove.

Rather than removing the thorn, God gave Paul an answer that redirected his focus: His grace was enough, and His power would be most evident in Paul’s weakness.

Key Insights

  1. God’s Grace is Sufficient
Grace here refers to God’s unmerited favour and His empowering presence. Paul learned that he didn’t need the thorn removed to thrive; God’s grace was enough to carry him through his trials.
  2. Power in Weakness
Human weakness creates space for God’s strength to work. When we are aware of our limitations, we are more likely to rely on God rather than on our abilities. His power isn’t diminished by our struggles but magnified through them.
  3. Boasting in Weakness
This seems counterintuitive in a culture that prizes strength and success. But Paul shifted his perspective, celebrating his weakness because it became the stage for God’s power to shine.
  4. Dependence on God
This verse is a reminder that our relationship with God grows strongest not when we feel self-sufficient but when we depend fully on Him. It’s in those moments of vulnerability that we experience His presence most deeply

Modern Application

This verse speaks to anyone facing challenges, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. It encourages us to embrace our struggles as opportunities for God’s power to work in us. It also reminds us not to rely on our strength but to trust in God’s grace to sustain us.

When you feel inadequate or overwhelmed, this verse reassures you that God’s strength will uphold you and even transform your weakest moments into testimonies of His power.
